Algeria does just enough to win against Mali – African Cup of Nations: Mali 0-1 Algeria

January 14, 2010

The second round of Group matches of the ongoing African Cup of Nations began today with World Cup finalist, Algeria locking horns with Mali. Algeria did just enough to win the match by a goal, in a game that produced few chances.

The first half of the game was less exciting and a far cry from the first round of fixtures. We saw some brief moments of counter-attacking football from Mali in the early minutes of the game. After that, both teams seem to have gone to sleep as the game dropped considerably in pace. They were sloppy, lost possession recklessly to each other and created few scoring chances.

Defender Rafik Halliche opened the scoresheet for Algeria with just few minutes to the end of the half. He climbed above the rather baldy exposed Mali defense to head home a brilliant free kick effected by the hardworking Karim Ziani.

The second half of the game was a shade faster then the snail-paced first half. Mali was quick to show their urgency to level the scoreline and kept the Algerians on the back foot. The Desert Foxes however had a well composed defense to deal with the threat. The introduction of Frederic Kanouté, who was left out left from the starting lineup, could not change the fortunes of Mali.

More to follow soon.
