Angola claim their first win at the expense of Malawi– African Cup of Nations: Angola 2-0 Malawi

January 14, 2010

With both Angola and Malawi having a lot at stake after the first round of group matches, the stage was set for an exciting encounter. It was clearly an unbalance opening 45 minutes as the host nation enjoyed a lion’s share of possession. They created the best chances and constantly put the opposition under pressure.

The first chance of the match was created by Flavio in the 4th minute and Manucho’s volley at close range was saved by goalkeeper Sanudi. The Angolans made some bursting runs on the wings with Mabina especially delivering some decent crosses to cause some threat. Hardworking Djalma was also able to create space for himself but his efforts were only good enough to cause a brief scare. A rare chance for Malawi, close to the end of the half, fell to striker Essau Kanyenda but his improvised back heel was picked up by Marques.

It took only 3 minutes after recess for Flavio to find the opener for Angola. He headed home an in-swinger from Djalma to register his third goal of the tournament. Manucho made the most of a defensive blunder by Malawi to put his side 2 goals up in the 52nd minute. The pace of the game shot up with both teams creating chances at both ends. Djalma was on show for the Palancras Negras, almost scoring a goal from a free kick.

When the Malawians found their rhythm it was a little too late to make a difference.
