January 15, 2010

The Elephants of Ivory Coast recorded a dominant win over the Black Stars of Ghana at the Estadio do Cabinda in the African Cup of Nations.

The striker Gervinho got Ivory Coast off to a flyer by scoring a decent header in the 22 minute. The goal seemed to have woken the Stars up. They enjoyed some good moments towards the end of the 1st half but could not find the back of the net. Kwadwo Asamoah created Ghana’s best chance of the half when his drive from outside the penalty box forced goalkeeper Barry Boubacar Copa to make a spectacular save.

In the second half, the Ghana coach Milovan Rajevac brought on Micheal Essien and striker Asamoah Gyan. The Stars took the game to the Ivorians but their build up was slow allowing the Elephants to cut the supply to their strikers. Amoah’s shot in the area came of the post much to the relief of the Ivorians.

In the 55th minute, Ivorian right back, Emmanuel Eboue’s vicious tackle on Opoku Agyemang gave referee Jerome Damon no other option but to send him off the pitch. Ghana enjoyed possession benefiting from their numerical advantage however they lacked the creative ability in the final third of the pitch to cause any major scare.

Siaka Chico Tiene doubled the Elephants lead with a spectacular free kick from 32m out, beating goalkeeper Richard Kingson on 66 minutes.

Didier Drogba scored from a header to put the game beyond doubt after 85 minutes of football. He was set up by substitute Keita who made the most of a lapse in concentration in the Ghanaian defense.

Ghana got a consolation in the final minute of the game through striker Asamoah Gyan who scored form the spot kick.

The result means that Ivory Coast have become the first team to qualify for the quater final stage of the 2010 African Cup of Nations. Ghana will have to wait for the outcome of the their next game against Burkina Faso to know their fate. They need nothing short of a win to go through to the next stage of the competition.
